Take a look on any parents’ online forums and you’ll find many asking the same question or baby clothes-related questions such as what baby romper suits are for? When baby romper suits are worn? and what to wear over or under a baby romper? It can be a real worry for parents figuring out how to clothe their babies, you don’t want your baby to be too hot, too cold, or uncomfortable.

What is a baby romper suit?

A baby romper suit is a one-piece outfit with open feet and hands, usually with cuffed ankles and sleeves. Baby rompers typically come in long sleeves, but some designs come in short sleeves. They’re mostly preferred for infants and young toddlers. Hence, you will usually find them sizes ranging from 3 up to 24 months. Similar to baby body suits, some rompers also come with a closure on the legs to make them easy for changing.

Rompers can be traced back to the early nineteenth century, however their popularity didn’t peak until the late nineteen fifties, when they were used as play wear for children and sometimes women as leisure and beach wear. However, there after it was only continued for infants and toddlers to wear as the demand for older girls and women faded.

When do babies wear romper suits?

Baby rompers can come in varying styles, with some coming in short sleeves and legs, others coming in longer styles, there are a few instances when you can fit your baby into a romper.  Although they can be used all year round, baby rompers are best worn in the spring or summer months. This is because they’re usually light and aren’t worn with many other layers, keeping your baby cool and comfy in the warm weather.

In the colder months, you may want to put a bodysuit underneath your baby’s romper to make sure they don’t get too cold, especially if you plan on heading outside with your baby. Body suits are similar to rompers except they’re usually thinner and worn as an underlayer for your baby.

What are baby romper suits used for?

Not only do rompers mean fewer pieces of clothing to put on a squirmy baby, but they also usually come in fun, fashion-forward styles, making them an ideal option for playdates, family gatherings or photo shoots.
Rompers can also be used for more everyday use too, like during an afternoon nap or if you need to throw on something quick and easy for them, they are very versatile.

What do babies wear under a romper suit?

Depending on the temperature, you may opt to put on a thin bodysuit for colder days or just a bottomless vest for the warmer days. The button closures by the legs of most rompers and bodysuits make it so you can put your baby's nappy on underneath the romper suit too.
